Kyle Juszczyk
Kyle Juszczyk Remaining in Bay Area
Sat, Mar 15, 2025, 8:14 AM
Jusczyk and the 49ers have agreed on a two-year, $8 million contract, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: San Francisco released Jusczyk on Monday, but the two sides came together to agree upon a quick reunion. The nine-time Pro Bowler will earn less money than last season, but the deal will allow him to remain with one of the few remaining NFL squads that still extensively uses a fullback. Though his value extends beyond statistical contributions, Jusczyk was a useful contributor on offense in 2024, posting 19 catches on 31 targets for 200 yards and two touchdowns while rushing five times for 26 yards and another TD.
Mac Jones
Mac Jones Moving to Bay Area
Wed, Mar 12, 2025, 9:05 PM
The 49ers signed Jones to a two-year, $7 million contract Wednesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: San Francisco was reportedly interested in Jones ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft, but the organization instead drafted Trey Lance with the third overall pick while Jones went to New England at No. 15. However, the 49ers will now get a chance to work with Jones after the Alabama product mostly failed to live up to expectations during his first four campaigns in the NFL. Jones has started 49 of his 52 regular-season appearances and has a career 54:44 TD:INT, so he'll be one of the NFL's most capable backups as he works behind Brock Purdy next season.
Demarcus Robinson
Demarcus Robinson Headed to San Francisco
Tue, Mar 11, 2025, 7:47 PM
Robinson is slated to sign a two-year contract with the 49ers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Robinson hauled in a combined 57 passes for 876 yards and 11 touchdowns in 33 games across his two seasons with the Rams and will now head to San Francisco. The 30-year-old will likely serve as the team's top depth receiver behind Brandon Aiyuk (knee), Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall during the 2025 campaign and could see extended playing time early in the season if Aiyuk is not fully recovered from a torn ACL suffered last November.
Jordan Mason
Jordan Mason Gets second-round tender
Tue, Mar 11, 2025, 8:27 AM
The 49ers are giving Mason (ankle) a second-round restricted free agent tender, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: It's a bit surprising to see Mason get a tender for over $5 million after his hot start to 2024 tailed off. The 49ers were in a tough spot, as an original-round tender would've cost about $2 million less but wouldn't have provided any draft compensation if they declined to match an offer sheet from another team (because Mason was undrafted originally). In any case, the 49ers don't necessarily have to keep Mason on the tender; they can use it as a bridge to a multi-year contract or a trade. If he does stay in San Francisco, he'll likely be the No. 2 running back behind Christian McCaffrey, although Isaac Guerendo is capable of pushing for the role. Mason missed the final five weeks of the 2024 season with a high-ankle sprain, but there hasn't been any report of surgery or a prolonged recovery/rehab process.
Patrick Taylor
Patrick Taylor Staying in San Francisco
Mon, Mar 10, 2025, 3:19 PM
The 49ers re-signed Taylor to a one-year deal Monday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: The 26-year-old running back will remain with the 49ers after spending most of last season on the team's active roster. He saw increased offensive action in 2024 due to injuries to Christian McCaffrey (knee), Jordan Mason (ankle) and Isaac Guerendo (knee), appearing in 13 games and taking 39 carries for 183 yards and one touchdown. Additionally, Taylor hauled in three of his 11 targets for 25 yards and accumulated 104 kick-return yards. Expect Taylor to serve as one of San Francisco's top reserve backs again in 2025.
Luke Farrell
Luke Farrell Bound for San Francisco
Mon, Mar 10, 2025, 2:40 PM
Farrell is slated to sign a three-year, $20.25 million contract with the 49ers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Farrell will bolster San Francisco's depth at tight end behind George Kittle. The Ohio State product made 12 catches on 17 targets for 67 yards last season, his fourth with the Jaguars.
Jordan Mason
Jordan Mason Drawing trade interest
Thu, Mar 6, 2025, 7:03 PM
Mason (ankle) is drawing trade interest, David Lombardi of The San Francisco Standard reports.
Analysis: Mason is set to hit restricted free agency this offseason, so the 49ers have contractual control over the running back for at least one more season. Lombardi believes San Francisco could tender Mason and then entertain trading him. With Christian McCaffrey battling an Achilles issue much of the year, Mason had a breakout 2024 season, rushing 153 times for 789 yards (5.2 YPC) and three touchdowns. He missed the final five games of the season with an ankle injury, and the 49ers have Isaac Guerendo as a younger and cheaper backup option behind McCaffrey.
Deebo Samuel
Deebo Samuel Washington and Houston intrigued
Fri, Feb 28, 2025, 12:22 PM
The Commanders and Texans are among the top teams that have expressed interest in acquiring Samuel, whose trade request San Francisco general manager John Lynch said the team plans to honor, Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reports.
Analysis: Schultz reports the Steelers and Broncos are among other teams that have inquired about trading for Samuel, but he notes Washington and Houston have been the strongest suitors to this point. The Commanders seem committed to adding another playmaker for Jayden Daniels, who earned 2024 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors despite Terry McLaurin being his only pass catcher to even approach the 1,000-yard mark. Houston, meanwhile, faces a similar conundrum, needing to surround C.J. Stroud with new offensive talent, as Stefon Diggs (knee - ACL) seems likely to move on, and Tank Dell (knee - ACL + MCL) is in danger of potentially missing a significant amount of the 2025 campaign. Samuel admittedly struggled to impress in 2024, finishing with a mere 51 catches (81 targets) for 670 yards and three touchdowns across 15 appearances, plus 42 carries for 136 yards and one score on a career-low 3.2 YPC. However, he boasts a uniquely versatile skill set and could yet rebound in greener pastures.
Deebo Samuel
Deebo Samuel Expected to be traded
Wed, Feb 26, 2025, 4:38 PM
San Francisco general manager John Lynch said Wednesday that the team plans to honor Samuel's request for a trade, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. "He's asked for a fresh start, and I think we're going to honor that," Lynch said. "He is a great player; I think often one of my favorite draft picks of my time. He makes plays and he makes game-changing plays. Everything is good...But it probably makes sense [to trade him]. We're having conversations so we'll see where that goes."
Analysis: Samuel is entering the final year of his contract and carries a $15.9 million cap number. He looked sluggish at times in 2024, finishing the season with just 51 catches for 670 yards and three touchdowns. His 9.1 rushing yards per game were also Samuel's fewest since an injury-shortened 2020 season. Given his pricey contract along with the fact that he turned 29 years old in January and is coming off an underwhelming season, Samuel is unlikely to fetch much more than a mid-round draft pick in any trade.
Brock Purdy
Brock Purdy Starts up extension talks
Wed, Feb 26, 2025, 4:31 PM
San Francisco general manager John Lynch said Wednesday that Purdy has had conversations with the front office regarding an extension, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Purdy's rookie deal runs through the 2025 season, but he's eligible for an extension and is looking at a significant raise. After making just $985,000 in 2024, Purdy's extension will surely be north of $50 million per year. Purdy's play fell off a bit last season, with his touchdown rate dropping from an NFL-best 7.0 percent in 2023 to just 4.4 percent in 2024. His yards per attempt also dipped more than a full yard from 9.6 to 8.5, and Purdy's 96.1 passer rating was his lowest since entering the league. Purdy was undoubtedly hindered by top wideout Brandon Aiyuk's (knee) and top running back Christian McCaffrey (knee) appearing in just seven and four games, respectively, and standout left tackle Trent Williams (ankle) was also sidelined for the final seven contests of the season.
George Kittle
George Kittle Discussing extension
Fri, Feb 21, 2025, 9:47 AM
Kittle's agent has already discussed a contract extension with the 49ers, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Kittle's contract runs through 2025, and while the 49ers may be wary of committing to the 31-year-old beyond the next few years, they'll likely work toward a deal that gives him guarantees for the upcoming season and 2026 while reducing his 2025 cap hit ($22.02 million). Kittle recently revealed that he played with cracked ribs for much of 2024, although it wasn't evident in his performance -- he had the second-most receiving yards (1,106) and second-most TDs (eight) of his eight-year career while posting personal bests for catch rate (83.0 percent) and yards per target (11.8). He did miss two games, due to separate hamstring injuries, and played just 29 percent of snaps in the season finale. In his 14 full games, Kittle fell shy of 40 yards just once and scored double-digit PPR points 12 times, leading tight ends in fantasy points per game in both PPR and standard-scoring formats.
Deebo Samuel
Deebo Samuel Gets permission to seek trade
Sun, Feb 9, 2025, 11:28 AM
The 49ers have granted Samuel (ribs) and his agent permission to find a trade partner, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Samuel requested a trade during his exit meeting with the team following the conclusion of the regular season, and San Francisco appears willing to comply with the request. After recording a career-best 77 catches for 1,405 yards with 365 rushing yards over 16 regular-season games in 2021, Samuel has struggled to replicate that production, with his best campaign in the three years since being 2023, when he posted a modest 892 receiving yards on 60 receptions along with 225 rushing yards in 15 regular-season contests. The versatile wideout's ability to work as a ball carrier out of the backfield and to return kicks no doubt adds to his appeal, but Samuel has also dealt with various injuries in recent campaigns, and he's played in just 43 of a possible 51 regular-season contests since 2021. Samuel appears to be ready to move on from the 49ers, saying, "It was a hard conversation to have with Kyle (Shanahan) because of the relationship that we have...But I have to do what's best. I'm more than thankful for the Niners giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, but now I think it's best that we find another team."
Eric Saubert
Eric Saubert Solid in backup role
Fri, Jan 17, 2025, 2:31 PM
Saubert recorded 11 receptions for 97 yards and a touchdown across 17 games this season.
Analysis: The veteran tight end was brought in to serve as a reliable backup to superstar tight end George Kittle in 2024. Saubert filled that role well, providing his usual strong blocking and sure hands while making two spot-starts for San Francisco. The 31-year-old is set to become an unrestricted free agent after completing his one-year deal with the 49ers.
Chris Conley
Chris Conley Reserve role in 2024
Fri, Jan 17, 2025, 2:12 PM
Conley (elbow) appeared in 15 games for the 49ers this season, finishing with six receptions on 12 targets for 76 yards.
Analysis: Conley finished his second year in San Francisco with similar minimal results from a fantasy perspective. The veteran wideout injured his elbow in the team's final game of the regular season, but the severity of the injury wasn't disclosed. At age 32, Conley is set to become an unrestricted free agent this upcoming offseason.
Jacob Cowing
Jacob Cowing Mainly used on ST in rookie year
Fri, Jan 17, 2025, 1:59 PM
Cowing finished his rookie season with four receptions for 80 yards and one rushing attempt for seven yards across 15 active games.
Analysis: Cowing was primarily used on special teams in 2024, producing 277 return yards. The Arizona product flashed some big-play ability as a receiver, averaging 20.0 yards per reception in limited action. Cowing could see more work as a sophomore in 2025, but it would likely take an injury or two in order to open up enough playing time to warrant fantasy consideration next year.
Kyle Juszczyk
Kyle Juszczyk Scores thrice in 2024
Fri, Jan 17, 2025, 1:35 PM
Juszczyk produced 26 rushing yards and a touchdown on five carries to go along with 19 receptions for 200 yards and a pair of scores while starting all 17 games for San Francisco this season.
Analysis: Juszczyk turned in another strong season from the near-extinct fullback position, providing the 49ers with elite blocking in addition to his services as an auxiliary receiving option. The 33-year-old will enter the second year of his restructured contract in 2025, presumably serving in a similar role, which provides great real-life value to his club despite holding little fantasy utility.
Brandon Allen
Brandon Allen Starts one game in 2024
Fri, Jan 17, 2025, 1:21 PM
Allen completed 17 of 30 pass attempts for 199 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions across three games with the 49ers in 2024.
Analysis: Allen finally made his on-field debut with San Francisco after spending much of his three-year tenure as a member on the practice squad. The veteran backup earned a start in Week 12 in place of then-injured starter Brock Purdy, but mixed results led to fellow backup Joshua Dobbs starting the team's final regular season contest. The 31-year-old Allen will become an unrestricted free agent this upcoming offseason, and he'll likely provide depth for San Francisco or another club if signed ahead of the 2025 campaign.
Isaiah Hodgins
Isaiah Hodgins Joins SF on reserve/future deal
Tue, Jan 7, 2025, 6:20 PM
San Francisco signed Hodgins to a reserve/future contract Tuesday.
Analysis: Hodgins was a sixth-round draft selection by the Bills in 2020. He had a mild breakthrough after joining the Giants midway through the 2022 campaign, recording 33 catches for 351 yards and four touchdowns over eight games. However, Hodgins had since fallen out of favor in New York and spent much of 2024 on the team's practice squad. The 49ers have signed two other veteran wideouts -- Trent Taylor and Russell Gage -- to reserve/future deals following the conclusion of the regular season, and the trio will be given the opportunity to compete for roster spots during training camp next summer.
Russell Gage
Russell Gage Remaining with SF
Tue, Jan 7, 2025, 6:11 PM
The 49ers signed Gage to a reserve/future deal Tuesday.
Analysis: Gage is an NFL veteran who spent the first four years of his career with the Falcons. The 28-year-old hasn't logged a snap in an NFL game since 2022 when he was with Tampa Bay -- during that campaign, he was fairly productive with a career-high five touchdown catches while recording 51 receptions for 426 yards over 13 regular-season contests. Gage latched on with San Francisco's practice squad this November and will now have a chance to compete for a roster spot during training camp this summer.
Isaac Guerendo
Isaac Guerendo Has MCL, ankle sprains
Mon, Jan 6, 2025, 7:10 PM
Guerendo has been diagnosed with MCL and ankle sprains in his left leg following an MRI on Monday, but he didn't damage the ACL in his left knee during Sunday's loss at Arizona, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The 49ers' 2024 campaign is over, but the team's season finale included yet another RB injury. On only his second carry of Sunday's game, Guerendo had his left leg twisted under him as he was tackled, and he needed a cart to go to the locker room. He thus is one of four San Francisco running backs to enter the offseason focusing on rehab. The others are Christian McCaffrey (knee), Jordan Mason (ankle) and Elijah Mitchell (hamstring). Guerendo, a 2024 fourth-round pick, proved to be effective when given the chance as a rookie, turning 84 carries into 420 yards (5.0 YPC) and four touchdowns and hauling in 15 of 16 targets for 152 yards in 16 appearances.
