Ross Dwelley
Ross Dwelley Back to SF on one-year pact
Fri, May 2, 2025, 2:39 PM
Dwelley signed a one-year contract with the 49ers on Friday.
Analysis: Dwelley spent his first six NFL seasons in San Francisco before playing for the Falcons in 2024. Back in the Bay Area, the 30-year-old Dwelley will compete for a roster spot with the 49ers in 2025. He has just 17 receiving yards in 29 regular-season appearances over the past two seasons, so Dwelley doesn't project to factor into the passing game much, even if he makes the team.
George Kittle
George Kittle Gets four-year extension
Tue, Apr 29, 2025, 8:08 AM
Kittle agreed to a four-year, $76.4 million extension with the 49ers on Tuesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: The deal reportedly includes $40 million guaranteed and likely will lower Kittle's 2025 salary-cap hit, which was previously scheduled to come in at $22.09 million. He'll turn 32 years old in October but hasn't shown any signs of slowing down, coming off a 2024 campaign with a five-year high for receptions (78), six-year high for receiving yards (1,106) and the second most touchdowns of his career (eight). Kittle still hasn't reached triple-digit targets since 2019, but he's capable of handling more volume if injuries to teammates necessitate it. He's typically the third tight end taken in early 2025 fantasy drafts, after Brock Bowers and Trey McBride.
Christian McCaffrey
Christian McCaffrey No restrictions at OTAs
Wed, Apr 23, 2025, 9:03 AM
McCaffrey is participating in the offseason program without any restrictions, ESPN.com's Nick Wagoner reports.
Analysis: Coach Kyle Shanahan declared McCaffrey healthy in early April, which wasn't surprising after the running back told reporters in early January that he was already almost back to full strength. The 49ers then traded Jordan Mason to the Vikings and allowed Elijah Mitchell to sign with the Chiefs, leaving 2024 fourth-round pick Isaac Guerendo as McCaffrey's likely backup for 2025. McCaffrey missed the first eight games of last season with Achilles tendinitis in both legs, later missing the final five games because of a PCL sprain in his right knee. It was his third time in the past five years missing double-digit games, but he played either 16 or 17 regular-season games in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022 and 2023. McCaffrey is under contract through 2027 after signing an extension last summer, albeit with no guaranteed money beyond 2025.
Brayden Willis
Brayden Willis Signs tender Tuesday
Tue, Apr 22, 2025, 7:10 PM
Willis signed his exclusive rights free-agent tender with the 49ers on Tuesday.
Analysis: Willis is now officially set to return for to San Francisco for the 2025 campaign after having been tendered earlier in the offseason. He didn't record any stats in 10 games last season and will spend the remainder of the offseason competing for a backup spot behind George Kittle.
Brock Purdy
Brock Purdy Participating in voluntary workouts
Tue, Apr 22, 2025, 10:47 AM
Purdy is present Tuesday for the start of San Francisco's voluntary offseason program, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Purdy's rookie deal is currently set to expire after the 2025 campaign, but he and the 49ers remain engaged in talks surrounding a new extension. Both Michael Silver and Dianna Russini of The Athletic report that Purdy's attendance for the start of voluntary OTAs is a sign that contract discussions are moving in the right direction, but this remains a situation that could drag on until the later stage of the offseason. Purdy struggled in 2024 compared to his stellar 2023 season, though the context of Brandon Aiyuk (knee) and Christian McCaffrey (knee) both missing most of the year must be noted. The 25-year-old signal-caller will have do make do without Deebo Samuel, who has been traded to the Commanders, within his offensive playmaking group in 2025, but standout 36-year-old left tackle Trent Williams (ankle) has confirmed his intent to return for a 16th NFL season.
George Kittle
George Kittle Not present for voluntary OTAs
Tue, Apr 22, 2025, 10:36 AM
Kittle is not at team facilities for the start of San Francisco's voluntary offseason workout program, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Kittle and the 49ers have engaged in conversations about a new extension this offseason, though Michael Silver of The Athletic reports that both sides remain far apart. As things currently stand, Kittle is heading into the final season of the five-year, $75 million contract he inked with San Francisco in August of 2020. The 31-year-old is coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons and is an undeniably integral piece of the 49ers' passing game, especially with Deebo Samuel having been traded to the Commanders and Brandon Aiyuk (knee) recovering from right ACL and MCL tears. Per Schefter, Brock Purdy is present for the start of voluntary OTAs, and the truth of the matter may simply be that until the quarterback's new deal is ironed out, San Francisco won't have the flexibility to move forward with other contract discussions.
Jake Tonges
Jake Tonges Re-signs with San Francisco
Thu, Apr 17, 2025, 6:01 PM
Tonges re-signed with the 49ers on a one-year, $1.03 million contract Thursday.
Analysis: It's the value of the exclusive rights tender for Tonges, who appeared in 16 regular-season games last season but saw just 34 snaps on offense. He played 232 snaps on special teams, and that figures to be where he'll fit in next season, should he make the 53-man roster.
Christian McCaffrey
Christian McCaffrey Recovered from knee injury
Tue, Apr 8, 2025, 9:55 AM
San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan said last week that McCaffrey (knee) is healthy and doing well, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Shanahan also mentioned the possibility of drafting another running back to join McCaffrey and 2024 fourth-round pick Isaac Guerendo. The 49ers traded Jordan Mason to the Vikings and lost Elijah Mitchell to the Chiefs in free agency, thinning out a backfield that was devastated by injuries last season. McCaffrey missed the first eight games with Achilles tendinitis and the final five games with a PCL sprain, ultimately taking 65 touches for 346 yards and no TDs in four appearances -- his third time playing fewer than half of the games in a season. He's apparently healthy well before the start of OTAs, but concerns about durability will continue to impact McCaffrey's fantasy value for his age-29 season ahead. It remains to be seen if his Achilles tendons, in particular, can hold up to the kind of workloads Shanahan typically has given him, though perhaps he is trying to avoid having to find out the answer to that question if the team does in fact add another running back to the mix.
Brandon Aiyuk
Brandon Aiyuk Progressing with injury recovery
Mon, Mar 31, 2025, 12:26 PM
GM John Lynch relayed Monday that Aiyuk, who tore the ACL and MCL in his right knee in October, met with Dr. Neal ElAttrache last week and got "good reviews" in terms of the progress he's made in his recovery, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: That said, there is still no concrete timetable for Aiyuk's return to action. Either way, Lynch noted that despite recent trade speculation, he expects the 2020 first-rounder -- who the 49ers signed to a four-year, $120 million extension last August -- to remain with the team this coming season. Due a $22.85 million bonus Tuesday, Aiyuk recorded 25 catches (on 47 targets) for 374 yards in seven games prior to his injury, and, once he's fully healthy, he'll be in line to headline a San Francisco WR corps that no longer includes Deebo Samuel. For now, the top available options behind Aiyuk are Jauan Jennings, Ricky Pearsall and Demarcus Robinson.
Kyle Juszczyk
Kyle Juszczyk Remaining in Bay Area
Sat, Mar 15, 2025, 8:14 AM
Jusczyk and the 49ers have agreed on a two-year, $8 million contract, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: San Francisco released Jusczyk on Monday, but the two sides came together to agree upon a quick reunion. The nine-time Pro Bowler will earn less money than last season, but the deal will allow him to remain with one of the few remaining NFL squads that still extensively uses a fullback. Though his value extends beyond statistical contributions, Jusczyk was a useful contributor on offense in 2024, posting 19 catches on 31 targets for 200 yards and two touchdowns while rushing five times for 26 yards and another TD.
Mac Jones
Mac Jones Moving to Bay Area
Wed, Mar 12, 2025, 9:05 PM
The 49ers signed Jones to a two-year, $7 million contract Wednesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: San Francisco was reportedly interested in Jones ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft, but the organization instead drafted Trey Lance with the third overall pick while Jones went to New England at No. 15. However, the 49ers will now get a chance to work with Jones after the Alabama product mostly failed to live up to expectations during his first four campaigns in the NFL. Jones has started 49 of his 52 regular-season appearances and has a career 54:44 TD:INT, so he'll be one of the NFL's most capable backups as he works behind Brock Purdy next season.
Demarcus Robinson
Demarcus Robinson Headed to San Francisco
Tue, Mar 11, 2025, 7:47 PM
Robinson is slated to sign a two-year contract with the 49ers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Robinson hauled in a combined 57 passes for 876 yards and 11 touchdowns in 33 games across his two seasons with the Rams and will now head to San Francisco. The 30-year-old will likely serve as the team's top depth receiver behind Brandon Aiyuk (knee), Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall during the 2025 campaign and could see extended playing time early in the season if Aiyuk is not fully recovered from a torn ACL suffered last November.
Jordan Mason
Jordan Mason Gets second-round tender
Tue, Mar 11, 2025, 8:27 AM
The 49ers are giving Mason (ankle) a second-round restricted free agent tender, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: It's a bit surprising to see Mason get a tender for over $5 million after his hot start to 2024 tailed off. The 49ers were in a tough spot, as an original-round tender would've cost about $2 million less but wouldn't have provided any draft compensation if they declined to match an offer sheet from another team (because Mason was undrafted originally). In any case, the 49ers don't necessarily have to keep Mason on the tender; they can use it as a bridge to a multi-year contract or a trade. If he does stay in San Francisco, he'll likely be the No. 2 running back behind Christian McCaffrey, although Isaac Guerendo is capable of pushing for the role. Mason missed the final five weeks of the 2024 season with a high-ankle sprain, but there hasn't been any report of surgery or a prolonged recovery/rehab process.
Patrick Taylor
Patrick Taylor Staying in San Francisco
Mon, Mar 10, 2025, 3:19 PM
The 49ers re-signed Taylor to a one-year deal Monday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: The 26-year-old running back will remain with the 49ers after spending most of last season on the team's active roster. He saw increased offensive action in 2024 due to injuries to Christian McCaffrey (knee), Jordan Mason (ankle) and Isaac Guerendo (knee), appearing in 13 games and taking 39 carries for 183 yards and one touchdown. Additionally, Taylor hauled in three of his 11 targets for 25 yards and accumulated 104 kick-return yards. Expect Taylor to serve as one of San Francisco's top reserve backs again in 2025.
Luke Farrell
Luke Farrell Bound for San Francisco
Mon, Mar 10, 2025, 2:40 PM
Farrell is slated to sign a three-year, $20.25 million contract with the 49ers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Farrell will bolster San Francisco's depth at tight end behind George Kittle. The Ohio State product made 12 catches on 17 targets for 67 yards last season, his fourth with the Jaguars.
Jordan Mason
Jordan Mason Drawing trade interest
Thu, Mar 6, 2025, 7:03 PM
Mason (ankle) is drawing trade interest, David Lombardi of The San Francisco Standard reports.
Analysis: Mason is set to hit restricted free agency this offseason, so the 49ers have contractual control over the running back for at least one more season. Lombardi believes San Francisco could tender Mason and then entertain trading him. With Christian McCaffrey battling an Achilles issue much of the year, Mason had a breakout 2024 season, rushing 153 times for 789 yards (5.2 YPC) and three touchdowns. He missed the final five games of the season with an ankle injury, and the 49ers have Isaac Guerendo as a younger and cheaper backup option behind McCaffrey.
Deebo Samuel
Deebo Samuel Washington and Houston intrigued
Fri, Feb 28, 2025, 12:22 PM
The Commanders and Texans are among the top teams that have expressed interest in acquiring Samuel, whose trade request San Francisco general manager John Lynch said the team plans to honor, Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reports.
Analysis: Schultz reports the Steelers and Broncos are among other teams that have inquired about trading for Samuel, but he notes Washington and Houston have been the strongest suitors to this point. The Commanders seem committed to adding another playmaker for Jayden Daniels, who earned 2024 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors despite Terry McLaurin being his only pass catcher to even approach the 1,000-yard mark. Houston, meanwhile, faces a similar conundrum, needing to surround C.J. Stroud with new offensive talent, as Stefon Diggs (knee - ACL) seems likely to move on, and Tank Dell (knee - ACL + MCL) is in danger of potentially missing a significant amount of the 2025 campaign. Samuel admittedly struggled to impress in 2024, finishing with a mere 51 catches (81 targets) for 670 yards and three touchdowns across 15 appearances, plus 42 carries for 136 yards and one score on a career-low 3.2 YPC. However, he boasts a uniquely versatile skill set and could yet rebound in greener pastures.
Deebo Samuel
Deebo Samuel Expected to be traded
Wed, Feb 26, 2025, 4:38 PM
San Francisco general manager John Lynch said Wednesday that the team plans to honor Samuel's request for a trade, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. "He's asked for a fresh start, and I think we're going to honor that," Lynch said. "He is a great player; I think often one of my favorite draft picks of my time. He makes plays and he makes game-changing plays. Everything is good...But it probably makes sense [to trade him]. We're having conversations so we'll see where that goes."
Analysis: Samuel is entering the final year of his contract and carries a $15.9 million cap number. He looked sluggish at times in 2024, finishing the season with just 51 catches for 670 yards and three touchdowns. His 9.1 rushing yards per game were also Samuel's fewest since an injury-shortened 2020 season. Given his pricey contract along with the fact that he turned 29 years old in January and is coming off an underwhelming season, Samuel is unlikely to fetch much more than a mid-round draft pick in any trade.
Brock Purdy
Brock Purdy Starts up extension talks
Wed, Feb 26, 2025, 4:31 PM
San Francisco general manager John Lynch said Wednesday that Purdy has had conversations with the front office regarding an extension, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Purdy's rookie deal runs through the 2025 season, but he's eligible for an extension and is looking at a significant raise. After making just $985,000 in 2024, Purdy's extension will surely be north of $50 million per year. Purdy's play fell off a bit last season, with his touchdown rate dropping from an NFL-best 7.0 percent in 2023 to just 4.4 percent in 2024. His yards per attempt also dipped more than a full yard from 9.6 to 8.5, and Purdy's 96.1 passer rating was his lowest since entering the league. Purdy was undoubtedly hindered by top wideout Brandon Aiyuk's (knee) and top running back Christian McCaffrey (knee) appearing in just seven and four games, respectively, and standout left tackle Trent Williams (ankle) was also sidelined for the final seven contests of the season.
George Kittle
George Kittle Discussing extension
Fri, Feb 21, 2025, 9:47 AM
Kittle's agent has already discussed a contract extension with the 49ers, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Kittle's contract runs through 2025, and while the 49ers may be wary of committing to the 31-year-old beyond the next few years, they'll likely work toward a deal that gives him guarantees for the upcoming season and 2026 while reducing his 2025 cap hit ($22.02 million). Kittle recently revealed that he played with cracked ribs for much of 2024, although it wasn't evident in his performance -- he had the second-most receiving yards (1,106) and second-most TDs (eight) of his eight-year career while posting personal bests for catch rate (83.0 percent) and yards per target (11.8). He did miss two games, due to separate hamstring injuries, and played just 29 percent of snaps in the season finale. In his 14 full games, Kittle fell shy of 40 yards just once and scored double-digit PPR points 12 times, leading tight ends in fantasy points per game in both PPR and standard-scoring formats.
