Brandon Aiyuk
Brandon Aiyuk Reportedly thriving in workouts
Fri, Jun 13, 2025, 7:37 PM
San Francisco general manager John Lynch said Thursday that Aiyuk (knee) has been "doing a tremendous job coming back," Kevin Patra of NFL.com reports.
Analysis: Aiyuk isn't expected to be ready to participate in training camp in late July as he continues to work his way back from from a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee, but the wideout has made a positive impression with his recovery. Lynch commented that Aiyuk has been "putting in the work" and stated that "it's kind of incredible how well he's healing." It's not year clear when Aiyuk will be ready for game action, and he probably won't be active when the 49ers open the 2025 season Sept. 7 against Seattle. However, he's on track to lead the team's wideout corps when he does return following the offseason departure of Deebo Samuel to Washington.
Christian McCaffrey
Christian McCaffrey Participates fully in minicamp
Thu, Jun 12, 2025, 9:03 PM
McCaffrey was one of a few 49ers veterans to participate in 11-on-11 work during mandatory minicamp, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: McCaffrey has been trending well from a health perspective this offseason, after struggling with both Achilles and knee issues in 2024. He practiced without restrictions in OTAs and then ramped up his activity further during mandatory minicamp. McCaffrey relayed that he wanted to test his health and was satisfied with the results as he turns his focus to the 2025 season.
Jauan Jennings
Jauan Jennings Bothered by calf
Thu, Jun 12, 2025, 12:29 PM
Jennings dealt with a minor calf injury during the offseason program, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: It doesn't sound like something that will impact Jennings' availability for training camp, but this did leave the 49ers without their projected top three WRs during spring practices, with Brandon Aiyuk still rehabbing an ACL tear and Ricky Pearsall nursing a hamstring injury. In their absence, free-agent addition Demarcus Robinson and 2024 fourth-round pick Jacob Cowing reportedly stepped up and took more reps on the first-team offense.
Brandon Aiyuk
Brandon Aiyuk Coaching up teammates at minicamp
Wed, Jun 11, 2025, 11:43 AM
Aiyuk (knee) is present at San Francisco's mandatory minicamp but is not practicing, though he contributed Tuesday by coaching up the team's younger receivers, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Aiyuk's recovery remains on track, but given the severity of the injury he's working back from, he's not considered a candidate to be ready for the start of training camp in late July. The 49ers haven't yet offered a tangible timetable for Aiyuk's expected return, but he's remaining involved at team activities despite not being ready to handle on-field work. While it's still possible Aiyuk is ready for the start of the regular season after tearing the ACL and MCL in his right knee last October, it's not a guarantee he'll be back to 100 percent form at any point in 2025. Even considering his deflated ADP in 2025 fantasy drafts, Aiyuk has to be considered a high-risk, high-upside selection. As he heads into the second season of the four-year, $120 million extension he inked with the 49ers last offseason, though, Aiyuk remains positioned to lead San Francisco's wide receiver corps when fully healthy.
Ricky Pearsall
Ricky Pearsall Could practice, but being cautious
Tue, Jun 10, 2025, 2:26 PM
49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday that Pearsall (hamstring) is healthy enough to participate in mandatory minicamp but that the team plans to be careful, and to prioritize having the second-year wideout ready for training camp, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Pearsall worked on the side at the start of mandatory minicamp Tuesday, per Lee Chan, and it seems likely that he won't resume handling on-field work until training camp. With Brandon Aiyuk (knee) also not yet ready to practice as he works his way back from ACL and MCL tears, Jauan Jennings and Demarcus Robinson are positioned to work as San Francisco's top receivers for the time being. Once fully healthy, Pearsall will work to begin putting together some offseason momentum and roll toward a hopeful Year 2 breakout.
Isaac Guerendo
Isaac Guerendo On field for OTAs
Fri, Jun 6, 2025, 11:14 AM
Guerendo (knee/ankle) was an active participant at voluntary OTAs, per the 49ers' official site.
Analysis: Guerendo sustained MCL and ankle sprains in his left leg during San Francisco's regular-season finale, but the 2024 fourth-round pick appears back to full health ahead of mandatory minicamp, which will take place June 10-11. Christian McCaffrey also looks fully healthy after having been limited to four appearances in 2024, which leaves Guerendo competing for No. 2 reps entering Year 2 of his career. The 49ers saw fit to trade Jordan Mason to Minnesota this offseason and let Elijah Mitchell link up with the Chiefs in free agency, though the team did re-sign Patrick Taylor and select Jordan James in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Guerendo's combo of athleticism and explosiveness makes him a high-upside backup to McCaffrey, but injuries have been a consistent roadblock for him dating back to college.
Trent Taylor
Trent Taylor Lands on IR
Tue, Jun 3, 2025, 6:37 PM
The 49ers placed Taylor (undisclosed) on injured reserve Tuesday.
Analysis: Taylor signed a reserve/future contract with San Francisco in early January, but the move to IR means he'll likely be out for the entire 2025 campaign. It's not clear what type of injury the receiver is dealing with, though he wasn't expected to be a major part of the team's wideout corps this season. Taylor spent most of last year on San Francisco's practice squad and caught one pass for 11 yards across the two games he saw action in with the 49ers.
Ricky Pearsall
Ricky Pearsall Tweaks hamstring
Thu, May 29, 2025, 4:24 PM
Pearsall is dealing with a hamstring injury, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Shanahan describes Pearsall's hamstring issue as a tweak, but the wideout, who Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News notes worked on the side during Thursday's OTA session, isn't likely to resume practicing until training camp, with the team leaning toward exercising caution with Pearsall during next month's mandatory minicamp. Once healthy, the 2024 first-rounder is projected to have a key role in a 49ers wideout corps that no longer includes Deebo Samuel, especially with Brandon Aiyuk still recovering from ACL and MCL tears that he sustained to his right knee last October.
Brock Purdy
Brock Purdy Gets massive five-year extension
Fri, May 16, 2025, 4:10 PM
Purdy and the 49ers agreed to terms Friday on a five-year, $265 million contract extension, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Purdy's new deal has been the largest domino waiting to fall of San Francisco's offseason, and the 2022 seventh-round pick now gains long-term commitment from the team via a contract that runs through 2030, and which includes $181 million in total guarantees. The 25-year-old is coming off a down season, having dipped essentially across the board in most passing metrics while throwing just 20 touchdowns, as opposed to the 31 passing scores he logged in 2023. San Francisco's offense as a whole tumbled in 2024, though, an outcome that can in no small part be blamed on injuries to Brandon Aiyuk (ACL) and Christian McCaffrey (knee). The 49ers also inked George Kittle to a four-year extension this offseason, a particularly notable signing given that the standout tight end may operate as Purdy's top pass catcher to kick off the 2025 season, considering Deebo Samuel has been traded to Washington and Aiyuk is still in the process of recovering. Still, with McCaffrey back in action, plus Jauan Jennings, Ricky Pearsall and Demarcus Robinson available to lead the wide-receiver room until Aiyuk is 100 percent, Purdy will have no shortage of offensive weapons at his disposal as he works to make the first year under his new deal a comeback season.
Ross Dwelley
Ross Dwelley Back to SF on one-year pact
Fri, May 2, 2025, 2:39 PM
Dwelley signed a one-year contract with the 49ers on Friday.
Analysis: Dwelley spent his first six NFL seasons in San Francisco before playing for the Falcons in 2024. Back in the Bay Area, the 30-year-old Dwelley will compete for a roster spot with the 49ers in 2025. He has just 17 receiving yards in 29 regular-season appearances over the past two seasons, so Dwelley doesn't project to factor into the passing game much, even if he makes the team.
George Kittle
George Kittle Gets four-year extension
Tue, Apr 29, 2025, 8:08 AM
Kittle agreed to a four-year, $76.4 million extension with the 49ers on Tuesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: The deal reportedly includes $40 million guaranteed and likely will lower Kittle's 2025 salary-cap hit, which was previously scheduled to come in at $22.09 million. He'll turn 32 years old in October but hasn't shown any signs of slowing down, coming off a 2024 campaign with a five-year high for receptions (78), six-year high for receiving yards (1,106) and the second most touchdowns of his career (eight). Kittle still hasn't reached triple-digit targets since 2019, but he's capable of handling more volume if injuries to teammates necessitate it. He's typically the third tight end taken in early 2025 fantasy drafts, after Brock Bowers and Trey McBride.
Christian McCaffrey
Christian McCaffrey No restrictions at OTAs
Wed, Apr 23, 2025, 9:03 AM
McCaffrey is participating in the offseason program without any restrictions, ESPN.com's Nick Wagoner reports.
Analysis: Coach Kyle Shanahan declared McCaffrey healthy in early April, which wasn't surprising after the running back told reporters in early January that he was already almost back to full strength. The 49ers then traded Jordan Mason to the Vikings and allowed Elijah Mitchell to sign with the Chiefs, leaving 2024 fourth-round pick Isaac Guerendo as McCaffrey's likely backup for 2025. McCaffrey missed the first eight games of last season with Achilles tendinitis in both legs, later missing the final five games because of a PCL sprain in his right knee. It was his third time in the past five years missing double-digit games, but he played either 16 or 17 regular-season games in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022 and 2023. McCaffrey is under contract through 2027 after signing an extension last summer, albeit with no guaranteed money beyond 2025.
Brayden Willis
Brayden Willis Signs tender Tuesday
Tue, Apr 22, 2025, 7:10 PM
Willis signed his exclusive rights free-agent tender with the 49ers on Tuesday.
Analysis: Willis is now officially set to return for to San Francisco for the 2025 campaign after having been tendered earlier in the offseason. He didn't record any stats in 10 games last season and will spend the remainder of the offseason competing for a backup spot behind George Kittle.
Brock Purdy
Brock Purdy Participating in voluntary workouts
Tue, Apr 22, 2025, 10:47 AM
Purdy is present Tuesday for the start of San Francisco's voluntary offseason program, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Purdy's rookie deal is currently set to expire after the 2025 campaign, but he and the 49ers remain engaged in talks surrounding a new extension. Both Michael Silver and Dianna Russini of The Athletic report that Purdy's attendance for the start of voluntary OTAs is a sign that contract discussions are moving in the right direction, but this remains a situation that could drag on until the later stage of the offseason. Purdy struggled in 2024 compared to his stellar 2023 season, though the context of Brandon Aiyuk (knee) and Christian McCaffrey (knee) both missing most of the year must be noted. The 25-year-old signal-caller will have do make do without Deebo Samuel, who has been traded to the Commanders, within his offensive playmaking group in 2025, but standout 36-year-old left tackle Trent Williams (ankle) has confirmed his intent to return for a 16th NFL season.
George Kittle
George Kittle Not present for voluntary OTAs
Tue, Apr 22, 2025, 10:36 AM
Kittle is not at team facilities for the start of San Francisco's voluntary offseason workout program, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Kittle and the 49ers have engaged in conversations about a new extension this offseason, though Michael Silver of The Athletic reports that both sides remain far apart. As things currently stand, Kittle is heading into the final season of the five-year, $75 million contract he inked with San Francisco in August of 2020. The 31-year-old is coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons and is an undeniably integral piece of the 49ers' passing game, especially with Deebo Samuel having been traded to the Commanders and Brandon Aiyuk (knee) recovering from right ACL and MCL tears. Per Schefter, Brock Purdy is present for the start of voluntary OTAs, and the truth of the matter may simply be that until the quarterback's new deal is ironed out, San Francisco won't have the flexibility to move forward with other contract discussions.
Jake Tonges
Jake Tonges Re-signs with San Francisco
Thu, Apr 17, 2025, 6:01 PM
Tonges re-signed with the 49ers on a one-year, $1.03 million contract Thursday.
Analysis: It's the value of the exclusive rights tender for Tonges, who appeared in 16 regular-season games last season but saw just 34 snaps on offense. He played 232 snaps on special teams, and that figures to be where he'll fit in next season, should he make the 53-man roster.
Christian McCaffrey
Christian McCaffrey Recovered from knee injury
Tue, Apr 8, 2025, 9:55 AM
San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan said last week that McCaffrey (knee) is healthy and doing well, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Shanahan also mentioned the possibility of drafting another running back to join McCaffrey and 2024 fourth-round pick Isaac Guerendo. The 49ers traded Jordan Mason to the Vikings and lost Elijah Mitchell to the Chiefs in free agency, thinning out a backfield that was devastated by injuries last season. McCaffrey missed the first eight games with Achilles tendinitis and the final five games with a PCL sprain, ultimately taking 65 touches for 346 yards and no TDs in four appearances -- his third time playing fewer than half of the games in a season. He's apparently healthy well before the start of OTAs, but concerns about durability will continue to impact McCaffrey's fantasy value for his age-29 season ahead. It remains to be seen if his Achilles tendons, in particular, can hold up to the kind of workloads Shanahan typically has given him, though perhaps he is trying to avoid having to find out the answer to that question if the team does in fact add another running back to the mix.
Brandon Aiyuk
Brandon Aiyuk Progressing with injury recovery
Mon, Mar 31, 2025, 12:26 PM
GM John Lynch relayed Monday that Aiyuk, who tore the ACL and MCL in his right knee in October, met with Dr. Neal ElAttrache last week and got "good reviews" in terms of the progress he's made in his recovery, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: That said, there is still no concrete timetable for Aiyuk's return to action. Either way, Lynch noted that despite recent trade speculation, he expects the 2020 first-rounder -- who the 49ers signed to a four-year, $120 million extension last August -- to remain with the team this coming season. Due a $22.85 million bonus Tuesday, Aiyuk recorded 25 catches (on 47 targets) for 374 yards in seven games prior to his injury, and, once he's fully healthy, he'll be in line to headline a San Francisco WR corps that no longer includes Deebo Samuel. For now, the top available options behind Aiyuk are Jauan Jennings, Ricky Pearsall and Demarcus Robinson.
Kyle Juszczyk
Kyle Juszczyk Remaining in Bay Area
Sat, Mar 15, 2025, 8:14 AM
Jusczyk and the 49ers have agreed on a two-year, $8 million contract, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: San Francisco released Jusczyk on Monday, but the two sides came together to agree upon a quick reunion. The nine-time Pro Bowler will earn less money than last season, but the deal will allow him to remain with one of the few remaining NFL squads that still extensively uses a fullback. Though his value extends beyond statistical contributions, Jusczyk was a useful contributor on offense in 2024, posting 19 catches on 31 targets for 200 yards and two touchdowns while rushing five times for 26 yards and another TD.
Mac Jones
Mac Jones Moving to Bay Area
Wed, Mar 12, 2025, 9:05 PM
The 49ers signed Jones to a two-year, $7 million contract Wednesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: San Francisco was reportedly interested in Jones ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft, but the organization instead drafted Trey Lance with the third overall pick while Jones went to New England at No. 15. However, the 49ers will now get a chance to work with Jones after the Alabama product mostly failed to live up to expectations during his first four campaigns in the NFL. Jones has started 49 of his 52 regular-season appearances and has a career 54:44 TD:INT, so he'll be one of the NFL's most capable backups as he works behind Brock Purdy next season.
